Winnie is at the centre of a land-filled mound, staying put and seeing all. She’s armed with her handbag – complete with mirror, glasses and toothbrush, which are all part of her daily rituals. For Winnie, in spite of everything, this is going to be a happy day, armed with her lipstick… and a gun.

From his cave her husband Willie hides in the shadows, as they both await the inevitable bell to ring in another happy day.

Following the success of a ‘Streetcar Named Desire’, ‘The Skriker’ and ‘Hamlet’, Royal Exchange Artistic Director Sarah Frankcom and Associate Artist Maxine Peake continue their collaboration with Samuel Beckett’s surreal masterpiece “Happy Days”.

See Maxine at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester until 23rd June.
